Underrated supplements you should take

1 Coenzyme Q10

Your mitochondria rely on this to generate energy. Without it, your cells struggle to function efficiently. But the issue is, CoQ10 levels drop with age and more so when you are on a statin. Dan said, “Supplementing can improve energy, heart health, and exercise recovery.”

He suggested taking 100-200 mg everyday with a meal containing fat, as it increases absorption significantly. “Use the ubiquinol form if you’re over 40. It’s more bioavailable than ubiquinone. Most people notice improved energy within 2-4 weeks.”

2 Glycine

It is an amino acid involved in producing proteins that help maintain tissues and regulate hormones. It plays an important role in improving sleep quality, supporting collagen production, and helping your liver detoxify. Studies show it can lower core body temperature, helping you fall asleep faster.

Dan advised taking it 3-5 g before bed. “Mix it in water or tea. It has a slightly sweet taste. You can also get it from bone broth and collagen supplements. If you wake up in the middle of the night, glycine might be what you’re missing,” he added.

3 L-Theanine

Dan said, “This is a compound that calms you without making you tired. It promotes alpha brain waves, the same ones you produce during meditation. It also takes the edge off caffeine while maintaining focus.”

You can consume 100-200 mg by combining it with your morning coffee. This prevents jitter and gives you consistent, focused energy. It can be taken alone before stressful situations or at night if racing thoughts keep you awake.

4 Psyllium Husk

This one’s not as popular, but helps those who don’t eat enough fibre. It is a great fix for the gut and improves bowel regularity and can lower cholesterol. Studies show it helps stabilise blood sugar after meals.

While Dan prefers to have it with Greek Yoghurt at breakfast to stay full, you can start with 5 g (about 1 tablespoon) mixed in a full glass of water. He advised drinking it before it turns into a get. “Take it 30 minutes before a meal. Increase up to 10-15 g daily if needed. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This is non-negotiable.”
